Note: The discoveries that were made about the effects of phase shifts on sentient subjects led directly into the research on what we now call Acuity Engines. Many of the same forces are at work in both technologies. If Blanche Keller had not been both phase-sensitive and extremely strong-willed (or if she had never had her accident) we might never have focused any research in this direction.
