Note: Modern readers might be curious to see that the people of 22c Mars are using the same curse words that we use today. It seems intuitive that with the speed at which slang and jargon shift with time, that curse words would also shift. The lack of shift is not due to translation or stylization on the part of the author, it is instead due to the general trend that language becomes more codified as literacy – and document storage and distribution technology – improves. While some jargon and slang mold themselves to the time in which they are used, the most basic few curse words have very long lives, as their taboo has become clearly and universally codified in the language. That codification has no mechanism by which to fade, the way technical jargon and generational slang do.
