Note: Heading for the trees was most definitely the right call for the small squad of Plums, despite being an indirect route over rough terrain. It was very likely that they would soon be over-taken by overwhelming air support, which would pin them down, and allow more powerful armored vehicles to intercept them. In the trees, they were more maneuverable than larger vehicles, and their holoscramblers would make them almost completely invisible from the air.
