Note: Autonomous vehicles of this era did not have the programming to recognise a standing person, even in the middle of the road, as anything other than a pedestrian, who they they should simply avoid and continue on. A person sitting or lying in the road, however is perceived as in distress, and the car will thus stop to allow the occupants to administer aid. Many motorist’s guides released at the time specifically recommended this practice as opposed to trying to gain the attention of the occupants, who would often be engaged in other activities, and not watching the passing landscape.
