Note: After manual operation of motor vehicles was outlawed, it took hundreds of years for enthusiasm for the machines to die down. “Drivers” would build kits of old Earth cars over the chassis of autonomous, electric vehicles. They would strive for authenticity, even including sound systems that replicated combustion engines and vestigial steering wheels that they could pretend to control the car with.
